Where do you begin? How to start your pilot training

It can be confusing trying to figure out how to begin your flight training efforts.  There are a lot of flight schools and options out there.

Hopefully we can help get you started in your journey with some simple steps you can take:

1. Define your goals - Are you wanting to fly for pleasure?  Or are you wanting to make a career out of it?  Maybe you want to see if you'll enjoy it at all, so you just want to test the waters.

2. Schedule a discovery flight with some different schools.  You'll pay $100 - $200 typically for a discovery flight, but the experience is priceless!  On a discovery flight, you'll get to meet one of the instructors at the school, see some of their airplanes, and even go for a quick flight.  After the flight, they'll be able to answer any questions you have, and explain how their school can help you meet your goals.  For more information, read our article What is a discovery flight?

3. Decide if any of those schools is right for you.  After you get some of your questions answered in person, you can get a feel for the culture of the school, their scheduling flexibility and options, their pricing, and if they're going to be able to help you efficiently and effectively reach your goals.  Use all of this information to see if one fits your needs better than the others.

4. Once you decide to move forward, you'll need to get an FAA medical certificate.  This is important because you wouldn't want to begin your training and spend lots of money working towards something that you might not be eligible for because of medical reasons.  Get your medical first so you have confidence that there's nothing standing in your way.  There are lots of tutorials online that can walk you through that process.  You will need to setup an account on the MedExpress website, submit an application for a medical certificate, and then schedule an appointment with an FAA Medical Examiner.

5. Begin your training!  Now you get to do the fun stuff!

We would love to be a part of your flight training if you're near the Mesa AZ area.  We fly out of Falcon Field, and have access to multiple aircraft for different training goals.

Feel free to contact us if we can help answer any questions, or help get you pointed in the right direction for your needs.
